RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang is the publisher of the "Frontiers in Healthcare Research" journal. It was initially named "RSU Megawati." It occupied two complexes, one on Jl. Belakang Gereja and the other on Jl. Jati Lama, Padang, with a capacity of 100 beds. In 1953, a new building was constructed on an 8.576-hectare plot on Jl.Burung Kutilang. Since Jl. Burung Kutilang is a short road within the hospital complex, its current location is more commonly associated with Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan Padang.

In 1978, by the decree of the Indonesian Minister of Health No.134, the hospital was officially named RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang, in honor of a son of West Sumatra who dedicated his life to healthcare and died during the independence struggle. By 1994, under Ministerial Decree No. 542, RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang evolved into a self-financing unit and a state non-tax revenue (PNBP) institution.

Government Regulation No. 123 of 2000 transformed it into a state-owned company, RS Perusahaan Jawatan (Perjan), known as Perjan RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang. Currently, as per Government Regulation No. 1 of 2004 and No. 23 of 2005, RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang operates as a Technical Implementation Unit, adopting the Financial Management Pattern of Public Service Agency (PPK-BLU).

RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang is a class A teaching hospital, accredited by the International Hospital Accreditation Commission (KARS) on December 31, 2018, and received International Accreditation on April 9, 2019. It primarily provides specialist and sub-specialist healthcare services to patients.
